Silk: it all started with a cup of tea.
Chinese legend has it that silk was discovered in 3,000 B.C. by Lady Hsi-Ling-Shi, the wife of Emperor Huang Ti. When a silkworm cocoon accidentally dropped into her hot tea, fine threads from the cocoon unraveled in the hot water and silk was discovered.
Silk was first used exclusively by the Chinese emperor, his household, close relations and the very highest of his court officials and dignitaries. Even the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar restricted the wearing of silk to himself and his favored officials. Noble and rich Roman and Greek families sought after this splendid textile throughout the centuries. The great demand for silk in Europe created The Silk Road which was built to support its desire for silk and commerce. For centuries silk had been as valuable as gold and was often used as currency in international trade.
For more than 2,000 years, the Chinese tightly guarded their secret of silk. Anyone revealing the secret, smuggling silk worm eggs or cocoons outside of China was punished by death.
